Overlooking the coastal waters of Chiba in Japan, a large hexagonal shell represents the central section of the Villa SSK which showcases the creation of Takeshi Hirobe Architects. The outer walls of the villa rise upwards and out thus creating a shape that gets wider as it rises above the base level. On the inside, the exposed beams responsible for the structural integrity are kept naked and natural which creates a warm, contemporary and welcoming feel.
From the architects: “The location for this project was adjacent to the calm and tranquil waters of Tokyo Bay. When we first visited the site, we were immediately overwhelmed by the presence of the ocean. Soon, however, we became attuned to the subtle cues coming from the surroundings, such as the movements of the sun, the flow of the wind, the scent of the tide, the stirrings of the plants, and the presence of the rocky mountain. We were particularly impressed by the sea and the soaring verticality of the sky overhead, as well as the rocky mountain on the opposite side and the vegetation growing on them. For this reason, we decided to design a building that would serve to connect these mountains to the imposing expanse of the ocean.”
Both sides of the villa offer outstanding views – one of the ocean and the other of the mountain. These are connected with timber panel wall-building and timber space trusses structure.
The living, dining and kitchen area are generously proportioned as the client has requested of the architects while the bathroom overlooks the ocean. There is one more room that could be used to display the owner’s beloved car.
Encircled by the central area, guest room and spare room, the courtyard can also serve as an outdoor living room when the dogs aren’t in the mood for playing.
