Located in the heart of Shanghai, the VARIO Shanghai Flagship Store stands as a bold statement of East meets West, where traditional Haipai elegance merges seamlessly with modern minimalism. Designed by Yuan Shi Design and led by Chief Designer Yuan Junlong, the 1,700 m² showroom reimagines the city’s cultural essence while offering a glimpse into the future of contemporary living.
Haipai culture, with its fusion of Eastern and Western elements, has been the soul of Shanghai for centuries. In recent years, this cultural blend has gained renewed attention, and the VARIO Flagship Store embraces it fully. The showroom’s design incorporates Neo-Orientalism, an approach that reconstructs the world from a Chinese perspective while avoiding mere replication.
The space evokes the grandeur of Shanghai’s golden age, merging with the refined elegance of modern luxury. Sculptures made using ancient lacquering techniques bring a sense of reverence, while the soft curves and natural light throughout the space create an immersive, calming atmosphere.
At the heart of the showroom is Lines, an artwork by Zhang Liping, who uses light itself as a brush. The irregular floating lines resonate with the light-filled space, adding a dynamic quality that enhances the showroom’s ambiance. The lighting design by Zhuguang Lighting highlights every detail, with modern linear strips accentuating the curves and textures of the space.
This interplay of light and shadow creates an intimate, transformative experience for visitors as they navigate through the showroom, each corner revealing new nuances of the space.
The VARIO showroom features soft, rounded corners, offering both psychological comfort and a sense of home. These curves invite visitors to envision their ideal living environments, blending everyday functionality with artful design. A holistic approach to spatial organization combines various living functions, encouraging the flow of imagination and fostering a vision of future home life.
The design team, including Fang Jian, Xue Chao, Yao Feng, and others, utilized high-quality materials like solid wood, marble, leather, and plush fabrics to evoke refined pleasure. The result is a space that balances opulence with restraint, inviting visitors to touch and feel the materials that define contemporary luxury.
The showroom features a Western-style kitchen with subtle nods to VARIO’s identity, such as an island incorporating the brand’s initial “V.” This space invites casual cooking and dining, exemplifying how modern functionality can blend with aesthetic considerations.
The wine cellar, with its soft diffused light and textured materials, provides an atmosphere of understated luxury, while the arched corridors and study space bridge the contemplative essence of Chinese design with Western trends.
One of the standout features of the VARIO Flagship Store is the long corridor, which draws inspiration from Chinese garden design. This corridor, connecting key spaces like the study and bedroom, offers a layered, rhythmic journey that deepens the showroom experience. It serves as a passage and a scenic route, highlighting the space’s multifaceted character.
Natural stone contrasts with refined textures, bringing authenticity to the urban atmosphere, and offering visitors a sanctuary where East and West, tradition and modernity, coexist in harmonious visual balance.
The VARIO Shanghai Flagship Store is more than just a showroom—it’s a journey through light, culture, and modern design. Blending Haipai elegance with contemporary luxury, it invites visitors to experience the fusion of tradition and innovation, creating a space where both art and everyday life are celebrated.
