The seaside town of Mount Martha in Melbourne, Australia is the home of this modern two-story residence designed by Bryant Aslop architects. The Tree Top House or as it is also known – the Mornington Peninsula Home, was designed around the owners’ passion for food, wine and entertainment. One of the main goals was also to maximize the treetop views that stretch out beyond the coast.
The key idea around which the entire design philosophy is based is that this home needs to be a private haven for a semi-retired couple who want to be able to entertain their guests in many different ways.
Our clients wanted a new house on a bayside site with views across Port Phillip Bay to the city. The building is contained to one edge of the site to maintain a strong connection with the existing landscape, as well as taking advantage of the long-distance views. A sophisticated weekender, the first floor living reflects the clients love of food, wine and entertaining. The materials used are simple, clean and robust – designed to engage with the landscape as it grows and defines the property.
The lower floor is internalised – the muted colour palette punctuated by a punch of green identifying the cellar which forms the core of the house. This colour is echoed in the first floor carpet as part of a lighter, airier assembly of materials and colours.–Bryant Aslop
