The LOOP by Alexis Dornier is a groundbreaking residential project nestled in the lush greenery of Pajangan, Bali. Designed for a client longing to break away from traditional “box-like” structures, the home is envisioned as an organic sculpture—redefining what it means to live in harmony with nature.
With a brief centered around freedom and non-conformity, Dornier responded with a bold spiral form reminiscent of a figure-eight. This continuous loop offers a fluid living experience with evolving perspectives and movement throughout the space—transforming everyday living into an immersive, architectural journey.
The radial layout challenges conventional architecture by introducing curved geometries and layered levels that follow a spiral path. This design not only promotes openness and natural ventilation but also encourages exploration, curiosity, and a deep sensory connection to the surrounding jungle.
The house appears to hover above the steep terrain, with structural supports hidden within the topography. This light-footed approach preserves the natural landscape while integrating built form seamlessly into it.
To unify the structure with its environment, Alexis Dornier employed a restrained palette of concrete, reclaimed wood, and local stone. These materials enhance the tactile quality of the residence while resisting the tropical climate.
Realizing such a complex form required extraordinary craftsmanship. From two-dimensional material bending to geometrical modeling, the project pushed the limits of construction and artisan collaboration. The result is a living space that feels both futuristic and grounded in its cultural and ecological context.
Each room in The LOOP reveals a different relationship with nature. From elevated jungle views in the bedrooms to wide, open communal areas, the residence fosters introspection, interaction, and a seamless transition between indoors and out.
The landscaping strategy—both wild and curated—erases the boundary between architecture and its setting. As a result, the home evolves with the seasons, weather, and time of day, offering a dynamic experience for its inhabitants.
This remarkable home is more than a physical structure; it is a shared artistic vision between architect and client. The homeowners were deeply involved in design development and material selection, ensuring that the final result reflects both their values and Dornier’s architectural philosophy.
The LOOP by Alexis Dornier stands as a shining example of innovation, collaboration, and biophilic design. It is a house that blurs the lines between sculpture, shelter, and spirit—inviting its inhabitants to embrace freedom, fluidity, and a profound connection to the natural world.
