In 2022, Makedesign Studio, led by architects Victoria Lukyanova and Diana Karnaukhova, unveiled “The House with a Soaring Staircase” in Rostov-on-Don, Russian Federation. This 270-square-meter residence underwent a comprehensive transformation, evolving from a dated 1990s design into a modern, minimalist haven that artfully combines concrete, glass, wood, and large-format ceramic granite.

A Visionary Renovation

The original structure, characterized by its heavy, monolithic staircase and compartmentalized rooms, no longer suited the lifestyle of the homeowners—a mature couple whose children had grown and moved out. The clients sought a complete overhaul, desiring a space that was both functional for their current needs and welcoming for family visits. Collaborating closely with an engineer-constructor, the Makedesign team reimagined the home’s layout, focusing on openness and fluidity.

The Soaring Staircase: A Central Sculptural Element

At the heart of the renovation lies the “soaring” staircase, a testament to innovative design and engineering. Replacing the original bulky staircase, this new structure appears to float, free from visible supports or handrails. Achieving this required persistent collaboration with structural engineers to devise a concealed support system that ensures both safety and aesthetic appeal. This staircase not only serves its functional purpose but also acts as a striking visual centerpiece, around which the rest of the interior harmoniously unfolds.

Design Elements: Merging Minimalism with Warmth

Embracing a minimalist philosophy, the interior showcases clean lines and expansive surfaces. The use of black fixtures, slatted wood panels, and strategic blue accents introduces depth and visual interest, creating a dynamic interplay with the neutral tones of cement and wood. The double-height ceilings amplify the sense of space, while large windows invite abundant natural light, enhancing the home’s airy ambiance.

Functional Spaces Tailored to Modern Living

The ground floor features an open-plan living area seamlessly connected to the kitchen, delineated by sleek glass partitions that maintain spatial continuity. The kitchen itself is a study in minimalist design, with hidden storage solutions and integrated appliances ensuring a clutter-free environment. On the upper level, former children’s rooms have been transformed into guest suites, and a versatile lounge area now serves as a hub for relaxation, work, and entertainment. This space is anchored by a modular sofa, providing flexibility for various activities, from family gatherings to quiet evenings.

A Harmonious Blend of Aesthetics and Functionality

“The House with a Soaring Staircase” exemplifies Makedesign Studio’s commitment to creating environments that are both visually stunning and supremely functional. Through thoughtful design and meticulous attention to detail, Lukyanova and Karnaukhova have crafted a residence that resonates with modern sensibilities while honoring the unique needs of its inhabitants.
