Located on a serene one-acre property in New Delhi, Planar House by DADA Partners redefines modern architecture with a bold interplay of monolithic concrete planes and biophilic design elements. Spanning 15,000 square feet, this 2023 residence seamlessly integrates nature, art, and family living, creating a tranquil yet dynamic space.

Architectural Vision: A Symphony of Planes and Light

At its core, Planar House is an exploration of layered planar volumes that form dramatic chasm-like spaces, accentuated by the sun’s ever-changing shadows. The rugged cast-in-situ concrete walls paired with muted stucco elements create a dual canvas, framing sunlight and blending modernity with timeless elegance.

The home’s F-shaped plan balances openness and privacy, with a west-facing entry court that welcomes the setting sun. The layout directs attention inward, where intimate courtyards and water features create a serene atmosphere.

Ground Floor: Spaces Rooted in Privacy and Connection

The ground floor is a carefully designed sequence of spaces that cater to both private moments and family gatherings:

  • West-Facing Entry and Lounge: Defined by two expansive freestanding concrete walls, the entry court leads to a glass-encased lobby. Beyond, the formal lounge and bar are bathed in the golden hues of the setting sun.
  • Tropical Courtyard: Nestled between the lounge and the master suite, this lush courtyard offers a cool, green counterpoint to the concrete façade.
  • Master Suite and Family Areas: The private master suite is tucked behind the second wall for complete seclusion, while the dining room, double-height family lounge, and central stair hall form the vibrant heart of the home.
  • East-Facing Courtyard: Landscaped with flowering trees, reflective water features, and open connections to indoor spaces, this courtyard embodies the principles of biophilic design, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors.

Upper Floor: Art and Living Spaces in Harmony

The upper level houses four bedrooms and a central art studio that doubles as a study. This eclectic space overlooks the double-height lounge below and opens to a terrace with views of the eastern courtyard. The integration of light and nature enhances the home’s atmosphere of creativity and tranquility.

Landscape Features: Meditation and Entertainment

The property extends beyond the main house to include thoughtful outdoor spaces:

  • Meditation Pyramid: Designed as a glass-capped pyramidal structure, this space invites quiet reflection while maintaining a connection to the natural surroundings.
  • Poolside Entertainment: The out-house block, housing a bar, gym, and changing rooms, frames a central swimming pool. This tropical oasis is perfect for year-round entertainment, blending seamlessly with the lush landscape.

Biophilic Design: A Connection with Nature

Reflective waterbodies, flowering trees, and abundant natural light enhance the home’s biophilic appeal. Every room is thoughtfully oriented to maximize views and natural ventilation, fostering a sense of harmony between the built environment and its surroundings.
