Perfect Ideas Of Letter Boards You Will Love Instantly

Even if you don’t know it by name, you probably know what a letter board is. It is a reduced version of the classic sign used by snack bars, bars, bakeries and various commercial establishments to present their menu of products and services. The principle is simple: a perforated mural that comes with several sets of letters that fit into the spaces, forming words and even entire sentences.

Although they were more associated with commercial spaces, nowadays letter boards are perfect for residential projects, as they bring a lot of personality to them. In them, you can write motivational phrases, and inspirational quotes or leave important notices for residents. But the truth is that when it comes to using a letter board in decoration, there are no rules. You can even use it to form drawings with different letters and words ( à la concrete poetry).

And if you’re looking for inspiration on what to write and where to use the letter board in your home decor, keep reading this post! We will show you how to make letter boards at home and how to use them in decoration.

How to make letter board: step by step

At first glance, it may not seem like it, but it is very easy and cheap to make a letter board from scratch in your home.

Here’s the list of materials:

  • box type frame
  • Felt
  • wooden skewers for barbecue
  • craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Extra letter kit for sign

Important: the wooden sticks must have a size compatible with the width of the chosen frame, or the tutorial does not work.

  1. Start by disassembling the frame.
  2. Use the bottom of the frame as a size reference for the sticks. To do this, just place the sticks horizontally, align them to one edge of the background and mark the size of the other edge. Then use scissors to cut off the excess toothpicks at the mark.
  3. Repeat the process with the amount needed to cover the entire bottom of your frame with the toothpicks (always horizontally).
  4. Place a skewer over the felt and mark the length of the felt. Also mark the sides of the toothpick in the felt, leaving an extra margin to be able to cover the whole toothpick with it.
  5. Cut the felt at the markings and use this first piece as a template for the others. You will need enough pieces to roll all the sticks you will use.
  6. Take the first piece of felt and run a line of glue in the centre and another at the end. Insert the toothpick in the centre and close one end to the other. Repeat the process with all the sticks.
  7. Take the frame and fit the felt-covered toothpicks from one end to the other. The toothpick layer must be tight, but not too tight, or you won’t be able to fit the letters.
  8. With all the spaces filled in, snap the background to the frame and close it.
  9. Now just use the letters to write whatever you want!
