Located in Manhattan Beach in California this contemporary private residence was designed by SUBU Design Architecture in 2015.
Their design is actually a remodel addition to an already existing house that was originally constructed in contemporary Santa Fe style.
The clients asked of SUBU Design Architecture to add a modern glass box for their master bedroom as well as to connect the indoors to the outdoors.
From the architects: “10th St Residence is a remodel addition to an existing 4,402 s.f. house that was originally constructed in contemporary Santa Fe Style with purple and yellow stucco. The clients came to us wanting to add a clean modern glass box for the 2nd floor master bedroom, better connection to the outdoors, and blur the line between formal and informal spaces.
We proposed to create an inverted oasis borrowing from the Japanese concept of Tokonoma. We created a series of view spaces to anchor each major room. Rather than simply opening up the rooms to the exterior, we introduced the concept of internal landscape. We achieved this by framing a flowering tree in a neighbor’s yard, by setting a green foreground on a roof deck to the city view, and by creating an indoor green wall sculpture that anchors your entrance into the master suite.”
