Lazer House: A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Architecture in Maringá, Brazil

Nestled on a gently sloping corner plot in Maringá, Brazil, Lazer House by Watanabe Arquitetura is an architectural marvel that masterfully integrates functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal. Spanning 3,283 square feet, this 2023 project showcases innovative design solutions to address the challenges posed by the site’s orientation and local climate while creating a warm and inviting living space.

A Thoughtful Two-Block Design

The design of Lazer House is divided into two distinct blocks:

  1. Upper Block: Positioned at street level, this block contains the private and social areas. Its strategic layout connects seamlessly to a lush garden, blending indoor and outdoor living.
  2. Lower Block: Subtly integrated 90 centimeters below the upper block, this section houses storage spaces and a garage with direct access to a busier street.

The division of blocks optimizes the sloped terrain, providing functional separation while maintaining visual harmony.

Sun Control and Thermal Comfort

The southwest-facing facade posed significant challenges due to intense sunlight. To address this, Watanabe Arquitetura incorporated a sophisticated sun control system comprising:

  • Beams and Eaves: These structural elements provide shade throughout the day, reducing heat gain and enhancing comfort.
  • Red Clay Brick Panel: This solid brickwork not only adds a textural element to the facade but also enhances privacy and thermal regulation.
  • Concrete Benches: Extending 13 meters, these benches invite the social areas to spill into the garden, fostering a strong indoor-outdoor connection.

These features create a dynamic facade that changes with the movement of the sun, balancing functionality and aesthetics.

Material Palette: A Natural and Inviting Appeal

The choice of materials for Lazer House emphasizes authenticity and comfort:

  • Red Clay Brick: Used both as cladding and as part of the shading system, this material adds a timeless, earthy charm.
  • Slate Floors: Left in their natural state, these floors provide a cool, pleasant touch, ideal for the Brazilian climate.
  • Wood Accents: Solid wood window frames in the bedrooms bring warmth and a cozy atmosphere to the private spaces.
  • Concrete Structure: Exposed concrete highlights the raw beauty of the structural elements, creating a contemporary yet grounded aesthetic.

A Garden-Centric Layout

The 600-square-meter plot, limited by local regulations, inspired a design that prioritizes garden connectivity. Large openings and an open-plan layout ensure the home feels spacious and connected to its natural surroundings. The garden serves as an extension of the social areas, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Sustainability in Design

Watanabe Arquitetura’s commitment to sustainability is evident in the design of Lazer House:

  • Passive Cooling: The combination of shading elements, natural ventilation, and thermal mass minimizes the need for mechanical cooling.
