Located at the foot of the mountains in Almaty, Kazakhstan, this serene apartment designed by Kvadrat Architects (Sergey Bekmukhanbetov and Rustam Minnehanov) provides a sanctuary for its owners—a couple frequently on business trips. The design aims to create a space for quick yet complete mental and physical recovery, enabling relaxation and energy renewal in just an hour, a much-needed retreat from their fast-paced lifestyle.

A Client-Centric Approach to Interior Design

Kvadrat Architects prioritize understanding the client’s specific needs to ensure the design resonates with their lifestyle. “Sometimes, clients aren’t fully aware of what they need until we start asking the right questions. We create a comfortable space where these answers can emerge naturally,” say the designers. This approach guided the development of an interior that enhances the clients’ experience of rest and rejuvenation.

Blending the Incongruous: Textures, Shades, and Balance

The apartment embraces the idea of creating calm through a thoughtful balance of contrasting elements. While light colors are often associated with airy and peaceful spaces, Kvadrat Architects avoid an over-reliance on pure white. Instead, the designers integrate warm shades that complement the ample natural light entering through panoramic windows. Large-format porcelain tiles in muted tones with a textured finish are used throughout, offering a tactile quality that invites barefoot exploration and enhances the feeling of warmth and comfort.

The space is defined by a harmonious mix of rough and smooth surfaces, matte and reflective finishes, creating a dynamic yet cohesive aesthetic. This contrast serves to enhance the apartment’s sense of volume, avoiding the sterility that can result from an overly minimalistic approach.

The Bedroom: A Design for Ultimate Relaxation

A key request from the apartment owners was to design a bedroom dedicated to rest and quality sleep. Kvadrat Architects responded by creating an environment of soft, enveloping shapes and neutral textures that encourage relaxation. The design of the bed, which evokes the form of an airy cloud, emphasizes comfort and sleep quality, providing a space where the owners can truly unwind.

Monolithic Harmony: The Bathroom as a Sanctuary

The bathroom is a testament to Kvadrat Architects’ focus on cohesive design. Every detail contributes to an overwhelming sense of balance. From the concrete sink to the porcelain tiles and carefully placed lighting, each element serves to create a unified, monolithic feel. The use of solid materials and their harmonious integration conveys a sense of peace, transforming the bathroom into a sanctuary for mental and physical rejuvenation.

A Masterful Combination of Function and Aesthetic

Kvadrat Architects’ design is not just about aesthetics—it’s about functionality that supports well-being. The thoughtful arrangement of space, selection of materials, and attention to detail make the apartment a retreat that fosters mental clarity, emotional comfort, and physical relaxation. The oversized furniture pieces further accentuate the space’s openness, creating a light yet expansive atmosphere.
