House Elysium by Architect Prineas

House Elysium does justice to the word Elysium that comes from the Greek Mythology and is best described as a place of perfect happiness. In this case, the place of perfect happiness was designed by the Australian practice Architect Prineas whose Allen Key House and Breeze Block House projects have already been featured on our site.

Alterations within the envelope of a Grand Victorian Terrace with a re-working of an extended living area at the garden level requiring excavation under the existing footprint and the creation of a 2 storey volume that extends the living space connecting multiple levels of the house to the garden. The project also includes a new garage at the rear with a studio/granny flat above.

The project makes some clear insertions into the heritage fabric: The material strategy in the living area was to insert a plywood volume that defines the 2 storey space as a contemporary insertion. The second bedroom is converted to a bathroom and ensuite. A central mirrored pod was created, naturally lit with a skylight, leaving the original room legible.

The scale and the authenticity of the new architecture and interiors matches the scale and aspiration of the original while re-orientating the house from the street to it’s private garden. The interiors provide clarity and connection that sets a forward looking framework for the next hundred years.
