House E by Caramel Architekten

Designed and completed by Caramel Architekten, House E is a contemporary residence built on a hillside overlooking the city of Linz in Austria. Its over-sized, flat concrete roof covers a ground level which is built 19 feet above street level to allow the surrounding garden to seamlessly connect to the living areas despite the steep topography.

From the architects: “Located on the periphery of the city, the plot of land offers a spectacular view of Linz, as long as one builds high enough to be able to gaze over the neighboring properties. That is why the ground story lies about 6m above street level – with the pleasant side-effect of allowing the garden area to adjoin the living area on the same level to the west and north, despite the extreme slope.
Since regulations only permitted construction up to a maximum of 200m² per story, it was not so easy to accommodate a spatial plan for a five-person family , especially since all the primary functions were to be arranged in the living area; an upper story was not desired.
Only the children’s section has a further level; each of the children’s rooms received a gallery with an adjoining children’s balcony, obtained through stacking above the access and sanitary level.”
