A Seamless Integration of Modernity and History
The Cube Building, located in the heart of Dnipro, represents a sophisticated fusion of contemporary architecture and its surrounding historical context. Designed by Oleksii Obraztsov and his team, the building stands as a modern reinterpretation of the urban fabric in this vibrant city. Its minimalist design, with a focus on functionality and aesthetic integration, makes it a striking addition to Dnipro’s evolving architectural landscape.
Design Philosophy: A Nod to the Past and a Vision for the Future
The project aims to respect the architectural character of the historical center of Dnipro while providing a contemporary space for the future. The building’s cubic form, with its 20-meter height, blends seamlessly into the surrounding area, with its solid end walls leaving room for future urban development along the street. The 20×20 meter main facade features window openings designed to echo the variety found in nearby structures, balancing modern sensibilities with the local architectural vernacular.
The Building’s Multifunctional Ground Level
The ground level of the Cube Building has been thoughtfully designed to foster community interaction. The sidewalk surrounding the building serves multiple purposes, including facilitating pedestrian traffic, creating organized parking spaces in accordance with municipal regulations, and offering space for planting new trees. The potential for a summer café along the main facade further enhances the space, offering a vibrant social area that complements the architectural ensemble.
Material Choices and Architectural Dialogue
In terms of materiality, the building contrasts the modern dark brown brick of its exterior with the white silicate brick of the adjacent Soviet-era residential blocks. This subtle dialogue between the contemporary and historical elements emphasizes the building’s commitment to respecting the past while looking towards the future. The brickwork evokes a sense of continuity with the old red clay bricks found in nearby buildings, ensuring that the Cube Building feels rooted in its environment.
Adapting to the Challenges of Modern Conflict
The completion of the Cube Building coincided with the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, bringing unprecedented challenges to the city and its residents. During power outages caused by ongoing military actions, the building’s staircases became the only means of communication between floors, symbolizing resilience and community. To uplift spirits during these difficult times, artworks by Andriy Vorkola—illustrations from his book 26 Samov and One Blue Kitten—were displayed on the staircases, providing a sense of connection and hope to those who traversed them.
