Club James: A Contemporary Evolution of an Iconic Architectural Legacy

Revitalizing an Architectural Masterpiece

The Sheats-Goldstein Residence, a hallmark of mid-century modern architecture, stands as one of Los Angeles’s most celebrated homes. Designed by John Lautner in 1962, the residence has gained fame not only for its striking design but also for its appearances in films, television, and music videos. In 2023, Los Angeles-based Conner + Perry Architects unveiled Club James—a visionary addition to the estate that seamlessly merges past and future.

This latest development, known as the Goldstein Entertainment Annex, exemplifies a collaborative effort spanning five decades. Originally envisioned by Lautner and estate owner James Goldstein, the project embodies architectural continuity while embracing contemporary design innovation.

A Timeless Collaboration

The evolution of the Sheats-Goldstein Residence reflects the dedication of three architectural teams over 70 years. Kristopher Conner and James Perry of Conner + Perry Architects have served as the architects of record since 2015, following their work under Duncan Nicholson, Lautner’s apprentice. Together, they have honored Lautner’s legacy by expanding and enhancing the property, while maintaining its foundational philosophy of organic architecture.

The Concept Behind Club James

Positioned adjacent to the original residence, Club James introduces a state-of-the-art entertainment facility beneath a hillside tennis court. This multi-functional space includes:

  • Entertainment Areas: A VIP room/library and a movie screening room.
  • Functional Offices: Spaces for Goldstein and his assistants.
  • Outdoor Terrace: Complete with dining and kitchen facilities, a pool, and a spa.

The design blends Lautner’s original vision, as seen in his preserved wood and cardboard model, with modern adaptations. Conner + Perry’s work incorporates minimal custom fittings, frameless glass enclosures, and bold geometric forms, harmonizing seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

Design Philosophy: Honoring the Past, Innovating the Future

“It is a delicate balance to preserve the genius of the original residence while creating designs that are in dialogue with it,” explains Kristopher Conner. The annex’s architectural DNA reflects Lautner’s ethos, interpreted through contemporary materials and methods to suit new functions. The result is an evolving visual language that remains true to the principles of organic architecture.

A Dynamic Hub for Creativity

Club James encapsulates the spirit of the Sheats-Goldstein Estate: an active, living space that blends function with artistry. Its features include:

  • Innovative Materials: A combination of concrete, wood, and frameless glass to create striking contrasts.
  • Thoughtful Details: Custom furnishings and curated art pieces enhance the vibrant, multifunctional environment.
  • Public Engagement: As a venue for events, tours, and artistic performances, the estate remains a vital cultural landmark.

A Legacy of Continuity and Evolution

Conner + Perry’s work on the estate extends beyond design. They oversee maintenance of the original residence, including the James Turrell Skyspace installation, “Above Horizon.” Their efforts ensure that the property remains a beacon of architectural innovation and cultural significance.

“This is not a static museum,” notes James Perry. “It is alive, continuously progressing, and improving, with each generation of architects contributing to its story.”

Looking Ahead

The Sheats-Goldstein Estate’s future is secured through Goldstein’s remarkable decision to bequeath the property to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). This ensures that the residence will inspire architects, designers, and visitors for generations to come.

As Conner reflects, “The Sheats-Goldstein Residence stands as a radical advancement in American architectural language. It bridges the past with the present, reconnecting us to nature while celebrating human innovation and craftsmanship.”
