Concealed storage is a great way to make a room appear bigger while gaining a lot of storage space in the process. It is also a great approach for when you need to keep the overall design of a room clean, but you still want extra storage compartments for essential items. In fact, the approach works for various rooms around the house, including the bathroom and the kitchen.
Not all concealed storage options have to be complicated. Some of the ideas we’re going to take a look at in this article can be turned into a DIY project you can work on during the weekend. Let’s get started, shall we?
Floating shelves already have a clean look to them. There are no exposed L brackets holding the shelves in place. They are also very easy to mount and can be paired with other interior elements to create a warm yet modern ambience.
You can choose to make your own floating shelves, but this time, add a drawer in the middle of the shelves. It can’t be too thick, because it will defeat the clean look altogether. However, you can still have enough space for storing documents or small tools you may need around the house.
To make it even better, you can make the floating shelves/drawers using reclaimed wood. Find a wide belt sander to completely refurbish the wood or stick to the rustic, vintage look that reclaimed wood has by opting for simpler finishing.
For mounting, hide three to four anchor screws to the base of the floating shelves, right behind the drawer, and you are all set. You now have floating shelves that double up as concealed drawers for storing smaller items.
This next one is my personal favorite: a tilt-out trash cabinet. We tend to hide our trash container under the kitchen sink or leave it exposed in the corner of the room. While there is nothing wrong with these approaches, there is actually a better way to conceal the trash container, and that is by hiding it behind a custom-made trash cabinet.
Use a couple of hinges on the bottom of the cabinet – instead of on the side – and attach a plastic trash container to the door of the cabinet. Similar to the previous DIY project, you can choose to use reclaimed wood to construct the cabinet.
Headboards are becoming more elaborate and beautiful, but they take up space and you don’t really use it other than for decorative purposes. Why not turn the headboard into a concealed storage unit that you can use for storing small pillows or sheets? This is the perfect DIY project to try if you have a relatively small bedroom and you want to utilize the available space as best as you can.
You can even use a set of hydraulic hinges to make opening and closing the headboard easier. Of course, this too is a DIY project in which you can use reclaimed wood and affordable materials, similar to the two projects we’ve discussed above.
