Perched in Huizhou, Guangdong Province, Casa of Sloping Roof is a 480m² duplex penthouse designed by BDSD Boundless Design. The project harmonizes minimalist aesthetics with a spatial design that prioritizes natural light, open living, and family interaction. Drawing inspiration from modernist principles, the design seeks to create a serene retreat that blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior.

The homeowner envisioned a home that fosters openness, sunshine, and family connection. In response, the design team curated a space akin to a sunlit art gallery, emphasizing simplicity, comfort, and natural flow.

Spatial Configuration and Flow

Central to the design is the vertical circulation, where a striking staircase serves as a focal point. This element not only facilitates movement but also frames views of the pitched roof—an architectural feature that anchors the design. The staircase is strategically positioned to enhance openness and provide visual continuity across levels.

The upper level, inspired by Le Corbusier, features a triangular roof structure that channels natural light into the space. This structural refinement accentuates the verticality of the home while offering expansive views and a sense of elevation. The integration of large windows and openings invites daylight and ventilation, transforming formerly enclosed areas into luminous spaces that encourage relaxation and engagement.

Materiality and Interior Design

The minimalist interior palette emphasizes natural materials, with wood and soft fabrics creating a warm, tactile environment. The flooring, continuous from indoor to outdoor spaces, enhances the sense of flow and spatial cohesion. Custom-designed storage solutions are seamlessly integrated into the architecture, maintaining a clean, uncluttered aesthetic.

The living room, anchored by earthy tones and understated decor, fosters a sense of calm and connection. Soft, diffused lighting complements the natural materials, enhancing the tranquility of the space.

Communal and Private Spaces

The open-plan kitchen and dining area act as a hub for family interaction. Without partitions, the layout promotes communal activities, encouraging an organic rhythm of daily life. The design allows for fluid transitions between cooking, dining, and socializing, reinforcing the home’s emphasis on shared experiences.

The private areas, including bedrooms and bathrooms, continue the minimalist theme. Each room is designed with attention to comfort and functionality, ensuring a serene retreat for rest and reflection. The pitched roof adds a sense of spaciousness, while carefully placed openings frame views of the surrounding landscape.

Connection to Nature

Outdoor terraces extend the living spaces, functioning as elevated viewpoints that overlook the surrounding landscape. A rectangular pool, positioned to the south, enhances the connection to nature and offers a tranquil space for relaxation. The integration of greenery and natural elements throughout the design fosters a dialogue between the built environment and the natural world.

Conclusion

Casa of Sloping Roof exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a home into a sanctuary. By balancing minimalist principles with structural ingenuity, the project achieves a harmonious blend of light, space, and functionality. The result is a dwelling that invites its occupants to engage with their surroundings, fostering a deeper connection to life and nature.
