Caring For Our Sculptures

They say that a sculpture is a like an egg, if you handle it without care, it will definitely get destroyed. This I only came to comprehend much later after I had destroyed one of the best sculptures I ever had. I literally cried for this sculpture. This is how much I loved it yet I lacked the knowledge of how to cater for my precious piece of art.

I placed my sculpture outside my kitchen garden only to find it faded from the strong rays of sunlight that was penetrating through. From that moment on, I learnt that just as everything else can get destroyed due to carelessness and negligence, sculptures too do.

Despite the fact that some designs wall decoration are of good quality, they too need our care and protection. The different kinds of materials used to make these sculptures make each of them unique in how they are supposed to be handled and cared for.

These materials include wood, zinc and brass. Here are some of the tips that you can use in order to prevent your sculptures from wearing out or getting destroyed.

1. Keep sculptures indoors

This was the very first lesson that I learnt about sculptures. Sculptures are affected by too much light, light impurities and humidity. They therefore need to stay in doors at all times so as to prevent them from fading. Taking good care of these sculptures would make them last for a long time.

2. Always keep them clean.

They say that cleanliness is second to Godliness. Just as everything else deserves to be kept hygienically clean around your home, your sculptures too deserve the same attention. Dusting them off once in a while is a good way of maintaining cleanliness. As you dust the walls with soft brushes, concentrate too on your sculptures piece by piece so as to remove any accumulated dust.

3. Consider the material.

While cleaning, it is important to consider the material of the sculptures. Different materials are cleaned differently. These materials include:

a) Wood

For instance, cleaning wood requires soft brushes as it is finished with natural oil. You can use small amount of water but not too much. Also, remember to use a mild detergent that will not destroy the sculpture. Using harsh cleaners or scratchy objects while cleaning that wood would make it wear out faster than you know it.

b) Zinc

Sculptures made of zinc from wulffwinding  are quite stronger compared to those made of wood. This is because zinc is more long lasting compared to the other materials. It therefore makes it easier when it comes to caring for such a sculpture.

Cleaning becomes easier with time as the surfaces patinate further according to external influences. For Zinc sculptures to serve you for a long time, you need to clean them carefully too while not putting too much pressure on the soft areas of the material.

c) Brass

Untreated natural brass is used in brass sculptures. With time, brass sculptures are able to patinate and diversify taking different tones. As a way of caring for brass sculptures, you should avoid polishing the surface or even treating the surface so that it can achieve a naturally patinated surface on its own.

If you want to remove the brass patina, it is recommended that you use brass polish. However, do not rub the surface nor use harsh cleaners or detergents on brass sculptures.

4. Do not carelessly drop them

Sculptures made of wood can break if subjected to very extreme falls. Do not carelessly drop them as it would be such a disappointment for you to buy a valuable beautiful sculpture only for you to break it.

Just as we love sculptures from wulffwinding, the designers and manufacturers do too. They do not therefore offer warranty in cases where someone mistreats their sculptures. So be careful and handle these sculptures with all the care and attention they deserve for them to serve you for a life time.
