Arcanum Architecture, a San Francisco based architecture firm, are responsible for the breathtaking design of this enormous home surrounded by raw nature.
It is the Atherton Avenue Residence we’re talking about and it quite something with its area of 6,700 sq ft. This residence is located in the town of Atherton in Northern California, USA. The site takes up a corner of a broad avenue and a side street and it consists of four volumes that are staggered along the center to make up the entire structure. All of them are connected by a passage that begins in the atrium and extends northward towards a pair of bedrooms and bathrooms. A staircase then leads up to a lounge and two kids’ rooms. The second volume is occupied by an entertainment center just before the end of the corridor and the beginning of the third volume where the kitchen and living room are placed.
From the architects: “This unique parcel allowed for access points to the site to be moved off of the main roadway, which along with the landscaping, provides enhanced privacy.
Through various finish materials that carry through from the exterior to interior we aimed to create a fluid transition between the outdoor and indoor spaces.
The extensive use of glass, with large sliding and pocketing doors open into protected landscaped areas that allow for connection to nature.
The site contains many existing large trees and foliage which were not only preserved, but became interesting focal points as the building’s various masses were situated around them.”
