Alexis Dornier Makings has recently completed ‘The Free Bird Project,’ a stunning private residence in Berawa, Bali. This striking home exemplifies the fusion of contemporary Japanese design with tropical modernism, reflecting architect Alexis Dornier’s dedication to harmonizing built environments with nature.
At the heart of ‘The Free Bird Project’ is a unique living room that elegantly spans above the swimming pool, linking two wings of the house. From an aerial perspective, the structure reveals an ‘H’-shaped layout. The living room features retractable glass walls, seamlessly transforming the space into an open outdoor area, while a glass floor offers captivating views of the pool below, reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick’s iconic “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
Sustainability is a fundamental aspect of the design, with Eco Mantra providing crucial environmental engineering consultancy. Their expertise has substantially minimized the home’s energy consumption and carbon footprint, emphasizing the project’s commitment to eco-friendly architecture.
The residence’s tropical garden, crafted by Bali Landscape Company, enhances the indoor-outdoor living experience. The lush garden forms a beautiful backdrop to the home, while the ground floor features a gym and two guest rooms designed to maximize views and garden access. Inspired by Rumah Kaca Kengo Kuma, the yoga area incorporates extensive glass to maintain a close connection with the natural environment.
Local craftsmanship is showcased throughout the residence with paras kerobokan stone walls and wooden ceilings adorned with fluted patterns. These elements, combined with diverse textiles and fabrics, add richness and warmth to the sleek architectural lines. Near the entrance, an expansive wine fridge serves both as a practical insulation feature and a striking sculptural element.
Kosame’s interior design greatly influences the home’s ambiance. Their thoughtfully curated furniture blends functionality with sculptural elegance, enhancing the overall living experience.
‘The Free Bird Project’ transcends the notion of a mere residence. It stands as a testament to how architecture can achieve a harmonious balance with its environment, offering a serene, sustainable, and immersive living experience.
