A renovated millstone house offers a real lesson in color on the banks of the Seine

This ambitious renovation begins with the classic story of a Parisian family in need of space and greenery. A couple and their twins may love their quintessentially Parisian neighbourhood of Batignolles, but they’re convinced the grass will be greener and there’ll be more square feet elsewhere.

Looking for a large house with a garden, they fell in love with a beautiful millstone house from the end of the 19th century in Frette-sur-Seine. A typical apartment from the time when Parisians invested in their first holiday home just a few minutes from the capital to enjoy the charms of the countryside. This millstone house still benefited from very fine Anglo-Norman architecture with many features on the ground floor such as carpentry, a winter gallery and raised arched windows.

When the new owners took over the four-storey building, it was presented in its original floor plan with divided rooms, as was common at the beginning of the 20th century. Very standardized spaces like the Haussmannian apartments and their so-called reception rooms are far removed from the spaces dedicated to the servants, such as the kitchen or the laundry room. To breathe new life into this place steeped in history, it needed to be modernized and adapted to family life.

Breaking the original plan was obvious to the architects responsible. Reintegrating the kitchen into the reception area, creating perspective, emphasizing the architectural power of the place through the use of colour and influencing the circulation to guarantee this old building a modern atmosphere: discover the ambitious (and colourful) adventure of this renovation.
