178 House: A Contemporary Architectural Marvel in Jalisco, Mexico

Architects: 21 Arquitectos
Project Year: 2023
Location: Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico

Located in the northern region of Zapopan, Jalisco, within a private urbanization, 178 House is a testament to innovative design seamlessly integrated with its natural surroundings. The site features a unique ascending topography, with the rear of the plot rising 1.5 meters above street level. This distinctive terrain inspired the architects to elevate the structure, creating a semi-basement beneath the primary level.

Architectural Design and Concept

The exterior of 178 House presents a striking volumetric form characterized by solid geometries, subtle subtractions, and light-filled voids. Nestled on a slope covered in natural vegetation, the house appears to hover above the landscape, blending effortlessly with its environment.

A side staircase carved into the slope leads visitors to the main entrance. Upon opening the grand oak wood door, visitors are greeted with an awe-inspiring interior. The entryway compresses the space before dramatically revealing a triple-height core, complete with a glass bridge connecting the semi-basement below. This central axis, spanning four levels, is accentuated by a black olive tree planted within a central atrium, adding a touch of nature to the architectural composition.

Spatial Organization

The ground floor hosts an expansive open-plan layout, designed with minimal structural supports to maximize spatial fluidity. The social areas seamlessly connect to the rear terrace and pool, which merge into the shared forested area of the development. This floor also includes a study, a full bathroom, a laundry room, and a storage space, ensuring functionality without compromising aesthetics.

Ascending to the upper level, the private quarters are strategically positioned. This floor comprises three bedrooms and a luxurious master suite with an en-suite bathroom and a walk-in dressing room, providing a sanctuary of comfort and privacy.

The semi-basement offers additional versatility, featuring a large play area, a guest bedroom, service quarters, and extra storage. This space complements the family’s lifestyle needs while maintaining a cohesive design narrative.

Material Palette and Finishes

The material selection for 178 House emphasizes harmony and contrast. White-coated masonry walls and a gray color palette form the foundation, while exposed concrete elements add a modern, industrial edge. Warmth is introduced through oak wood accents, while large-format glass panels invite natural light and blur the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. The inclusion of Saint Thomas marble further elevates the luxurious yet understated aesthetic.

Integration with Nature

One of the most striking aspects of 178 House is its integration with the surrounding landscape. The design respects the natural topography, leveraging it to create a dynamic relationship between the built environment and its setting. The rear terrace and pool extend into the communal forest, offering residents an uninterrupted connection with nature.
