The Elegant Farmhouse by Villamar Design

The Elegant Farmhouse, designed by Villamar Design in Saanich, British Columbia, Canada, is a perfect example of a modern farmhouse designed for a young family. Spread over an area of 4,495 square feet, the design is elegant, simple and practical. The site was chosen after a thorough visit and analysis of the land, its topography and yearly conditions.

The home is set at the top of the back slope, offering beautiful valley vistas, and is designed to be private, flood-free, and commanding an attractive entry. It features a covered porch, a garage facing the street, and several French doors that open out to the rear patio and firepit area. The house has a well-appointed ensuite that connects to a large walk-in closet, a mud and laundry room that connects the garage to the main home, and lodges the pantry and a separate office location just off the kitchen.

This home is a great example of a collaboration of rooms and spaces designed to bring life and rest into the energy of a young family.

A young family who bought this farmland in 2019 came to us to design and build a new home. The arrangement for the home was to be a simple elegant home for a large lot. They requested a modern farmhouse to raise kids, to live, to work and to enjoy.

Our design process always includes visiting the site as one of the first components of the process. After meeting the family on the site and seeing the topography and learning about the land and its yearly conditions, we chose to layout the site for the home at the top of the back slope. It is set well off the street and commands an attractive entry. This part of the site is free draining and does not flood. It is private, and to top it all off, it commands beautiful valley vistas.

The home entry is an elegant, covered porch allowing free conversations as visitors come and go form the dwelling. A garage faces the street but looks more like part of the home until you get closer; and once at the entry, you’re able to see the windows above the garage that house the legal secondary suite on the property. A mud and laundry room connect the garage to the main home and lodges the pantry and a separate office location just off the kitchen.

The kitchen, dining and great room have several French doors that open out to the rear patio and firepit area. Both sides of the patio have covered decks that also serve as balconies for some of the upstairs bedrooms. There is a barn door-enclosed flex space at the top of the stairs used as a play area, and next to it, behind the beautiful primary suite (with sweeping views) is a well-appointed ensuite that connects to a large walk-in closet.

This home is a great collaboration of rooms and spaces designed to bring life and rest into the energy of a young family. There is a place for everyone here, including guests and visitors; and as time moves on the next residents will have to change nothing. Whatever is it you are wanting to create in your next project, we would love to talk to you about how to best make it a reality.
